Café Talk: The Best Beans in Keelung, Taiwan

If you’re anything like me, you loooooove cafés! The smell of the freshly pressed coffee beans, breakfast food and lovely smiling faces are what make my days 10x better. If I could choose to live anywhere, it would be in a café – but seriously. Cafés are a different kind of breed when discussing restaurants and for good reason; the atmosphere, the music, the decorations, the food and yes – the coffee!

Coming to Taiwan I didn’t think that I would be able to find many cafés I liked. Chicago introduced me to a whole new foodie and café culture than what I was use to, so naturally I thought nothing could compare. However, a great thing about cafés is it’s not only about the coffee; atmosphere has a lot to do with customer satisfaction too. If I walk into a café and everything seems very commercialized or poppy, I immediately exclude it from my favorite café list. I just can’t. But these.. these cafés each have their own unique flare, or in this case, java (;

8 Café, “The Blasé Nomad Café” – I’ve named this one based off of it’s laid-back personality and friendly workers and customers. I come here every week and order the same thing; eggs, toast, salad and coffee. The coffee shop is filled with decorations that I personally believe reflect the owners style and personality. I can’t truly communicate with him because he doesn’t speak much English, but what I can tell you is that he loves his biker gear, music and coffee. My daddy is a Harley Davidson rider, so I’m naturally drawn to this and feel at home.

Leaf Café, The Cheerful Trinket Café – If you love small detail and good vibes, you will enjoy the Leaf Café. I come here to do my writing and drink the delicious coffee while listening to some acoustic guitar. This place reminds me of a café that my grandma or auntie would create if they loved coffee enough. It’s filled with little treasures and unique coffee cups that make you feel.. well.. happy. Come here and make friends, leave and you’ll feel like family!

Way Cup Cafe, The Cutesy Café – I’ve named this one based off of it’s interior, it’s exterior and it’s workers – everything is just so cute! Come here for a cup of coffee or to read a compelling book, either way you’ll leave with a smile on your face and a panini in your stomach 😉

THIS café (not sure what the name is), Taiwamomma Café – Lastly, I’ve named this one based off it’s fine dining, cleanliness, and luxurious seating. I believe this is every Taiwan mommy’s favorite café simple because of it’s mature atmosphere and views. Their food is delightful and coffee is pure, but anyone on a budget or wanting more notable design and character would suit with one of the other cafés. With that said, their food is absolutely mouthwatering and views make your stomach drop. I really enjoy coming to this café to sit and ponder while getting lost in the city views.

Where are these cafés? – You can find the first three in downtown Keelung City all within 4-5 blocks away from the harbor. The last café is on the hill near the Keelung sign. You’ll have to go around the hill on the east side and up through the tunnel, then turn right. It is your last café on the right before you get to the very top of the hill.
