Costa Mesa, situated between Newport and Huntington Beach, is a small and beautiful city better known for the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and shopping in the South Coast Plaza. But if you don’t have shopping or plans to watch an orchestra in your budget, then there are an array of cheap and free activities to enjoy. The West Coast, in general, is known for its beautiful weather, pristine beaches, and great surf. Costa Mesa is no exception. Along with a vast selection of national parks and events at your fingertips, you can find it easy to enjoy life on the West Coast, in Costa Mesa, without breaking the bank.

Here are a few great ways on how to explore Costa Mesa on a budget.

Get Sun-kissed at the Nearby Beaches

The world-famous Newport Beach, consisting of more than 8 miles of beautiful sandy beach, is conveniently located next to Crystal Cove State Park and the Newport Bay. This beach is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and rustic wilderness. A few miles south of Newport Beach and across from The Waterfront Beach Resort you’ll find Surf City, better known as Huntington Beach. The beach received its gnarly nickname because of its consistent waves, heaps of surfers, and surf competitions. This beach has also been known to host professional sporting events such as the U.S. Open of Surfing, AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and the Pacific Shoreline Marathon.

Enjoy Over 29 Recreational Parks

Costa Mesa has over 29 parks located throughout the city. While some might be smaller than others, the most famous parks to visit are the Fairview Park, Costa Mesa Bark Park, and TeWinkle Park. Fairview Park is great for outdoor activities such as horseback riding, hiking and kite flying as its 208-acre public land includes forestation and open terrain. For dog lovers, Costa Mesa Bark Park is a fenced 2-acre dog park where your dog can run and play freely. TeWinkle Park is perfect for a leisurely stroll as you’ll see wild ducks and family barbecues along its perfectly situated lake.

Put on Your Dancing Shoes at Concerts in the Park

Concerts in the Park is a free series of live music hosted in July in Costa Mesa Fairview Park. Festival activity include drawing prizes, community booths, a beer and wine garden, children’s activities, gourmet food trucks, and, of course, live music. Take an evening off work and enjoy this family friendly activity on Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., music starts at 6:15 p.m.

Take Advantage of the City

Rollerblading, renting bikes, and walking along the beach are all things you can do with little to no cost. Wanting a walk with a view? Head to the Newport or Balboa Pier where you’ll find stunning views of the beautiful beaches and ocean. Lastly, check out the year-round farmer’s market and street fair on Main Street every Tuesday night.

If you’re traveling on a budget, you won’t have a problem finding cheap activities or hotels in Costa Mesa. However, feel free to search through Hipmunkor Excursiopedia where you can find more activities and events in the area.
