My Top 5 Reasons to Start Practicing Yoga, Now!

I told myself once I got back to the states that I would start working on getting my yoga instructors license. I love exercising and being healthy, and a true passion of mine is helping people achieve their goals. Everyone wants to be healthier and look their best and in multiple ways yoga can do just that. Deriving from India, China, Nepal and Southeast Asia, yoga practices of various types have gained popularity because they are adaptable to people of all ages and most levels of fitness, and impart significant benefits on both the body and mind.

The idea that yoga is beneficial is not new and more and more people have become aware of the benefits that practicing yoga has. I don’t do it as often as I’d like, but even so I have experienced minor changes when practicing. The list below are my top five reasons why you should start practicing yoga, now!

  • Better sleep – With an increasing percentage of the population suffering from varying degrees of insomnia, this benefit of yoga is an often overlooked feature. Doing yoga a few times a week helps calm the nervous system and improve rest; which can affect your health overall.
  • Relieves stress – “The muscles tense, the heart beats faster, breathing patterns change, and if the cause of stress isn’t discontinued, the body secretes more hormones that increase blood sugar levels, raising blood pressure. Yoga is one of the few stress-relief tools that has a positive effect on all the body systems involved.” – Garrett Sarley, president and CEO of the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Lenox, Mass. 
  • Sharpens mental health – Regular practice of yoga has been suggested to help with concentration, memory and even, in recent research, has been proven to help prevent and treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
  • Enhances muscle tone – In addition to getting and maintaining a healthy weight, yoga can also help you build lean muscle, tone and define existing muscle. For those of you who don’t wish to bulk up, you can decrease the weight you use while practicing. Either way, you will have a sexy and gorgeous silhouette.
  • You become a happier you! – A good night’s rest, less stress, a sharp mind and a sharp body will make anyone happy! Yoga can do nothing but positive things for you if you practice it correctly.

Taking an hour out of each day to implement exercise and healthy is a lot easier than it looks. Once you commit, it’s a piece of cake 😉 Everyone wants to live a healthy life and look their best, so why not start now?
